Knights slip past Statesmen in OT

GENESEO, N.Y.— The Hobart College soccer team was edged by Geneseo 2-1 in overtime in a non-conference contest at College Stadium this afternoon. The Statesmen are now 3-1-0 on the season.

The Knights (2-2-1) scored the game-winning goal in the 98th minute off the foot of Ryan Hike. Hike beat a defender and volley a shot into the corner of the net for the game-winning goal. Ari Samoohy was credited with an assist on the winner.

Geneseo nearly opened the scoring in the 12th minute, but Hobart goalie Christian Burkhart made a pair of highlight reel saves to keep the game scoreless. On the first attempt, Samoohy carried the ball down the left wing, dribbled into the box and fired a shot on cage that Burkhart turned aside with his legs. The rebound bounced to Adam Astarita., who immediately sent the ball back towards the cage. Burkhart, who was still recovering from the initial shot, dove to his left to make the save. In the 24th minute, Tyler Lewandowski had a scoring opportunity taken off the line by Mick van Timmeren.

The Statesmen broke the deadlock in the 35th minute. Following a foul in the 18-yard box, Matias Valenzuela Matic stepped up and buried a penalty kick attempt. It was his first collegiate goal.

In the 85th minute, the Knights tied the game off a shot from Lewandowski. His attempt from inside the 18-yard box redirected off a defender and into the back of the net.

Charlie Widing had Hobart's lone chance in the extra session. His shot was smothered by Will Price.

Geneseo finished the game with a 15-7 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Burkhart went the distance in the Hobart goal, making four saves. Price started in goal for Hobart and made 1 save in just under 99 minutes of action.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 15, when they take on Cortland. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
