Field Hockey Doubles Up Valiants

GENEVA, N.Y.—Midfielder Elizabeth Jacobia recorded a goal and an assist to lead the William Smith College field hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Manhattanville College in the opening match of the 2021 William Smith Classic. The Herons improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Valiants fall to 0-4.

After a scoreless first quarter, Manhattanville scored the Classic's opening goal on a backhanded shot by Charlotte Stanwood in the 20th minute. Jacobia equalized four minutes later, scoring off a rebound. Two minutes later, Rebecca Mantione recorded her first collegiate goal, also on a batted home rebound, for a 2-1 Heron lead.

William Smith carried its one-goal advantage into halftime. The Herons outshot the Valiants 14-3 in the first 30 minutes.

The score remained 2-1 through three quarters, but less than a minute into the final frame, Kate Buckley tied the match with a shot into the left corner of the cage. Sofia Pattillo scored what proved to be the game winner with under seven minutes remaining. It was her team-leading third goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Libby Maxwell tacked on an insurance goal that was set up by Jacobia.

Stephanie Stone started and made two saves through the first 51 minutes of the match. Kristen McCormick played the final nine minutes with out facing a shot.

Florence Harrison made nine saves for Manhattanville.

In the second game of the Classic, St. Lawrence University (3-1) scored twice in the final two minutes of the match, to pull off a 4-3 victory over Lebanon Valley College (0-4). Emily Kline gave the Dutchmen a 3-2 lead in the 55th minute, but Mckenzie Haberl answered for the Saints with 1:07 left in the fourth quarter. Ciara Halloran notched the go-ahead goal with 15 seconds left, burying a shot from the edge of the circle.

Manhattanville and St. Lawrence will open Day 2 of the Classic, squaring off at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. William Smith and Lebanon Valley will follow at 2 p.m.
