Game Recap: William Smith Field Hockey | | Ken DeBolt

LVC slips past Herons 1-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—Lebanon Valley College scored on a penalty corner in the 16th minute and made it stand up to score a 1-0 victory over William Smith College to conclude the 2021 William Smith Field Hockey Classic.

Less than a minute into the second quarter, the Dutchmen earned a penalty corner. Starting from the right side of the cage, Lebanon Valley (1-4) put the ball in play at the top of the circle where it was passed to Danielle Alba on the left side. Her first shot was blocked by a Heron defender, but she corralled the rebound and tucked her second shot inside the left post for her first goal of the season.

An evenly played match that featured end-to-end action. William Smith (2-2) carried the play late, firing a shot past goalie Corinne Kearney with about 80 seconds remaining. However, the Herons didn't get a chance to celebrate as the shot came just after an official's whistle.

Total shots were even at six apiece. LVC had a 7-5 edge in penalty corners .Kearney made one save to get the win. William Smith goalie Kristen McCormick had two saves in the match.

In the Classic's first game today, St. Lawrence (5-1) erased a 3-1 first half deficit to take a 5-3 win over Manhattanville (0-4).

The Herons will be home again on Wednesday, Sept. 15, when they host SUNY Geneseo (3-1). The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
