GENEVA, N.Y.— The second ranked William Smith College soccer team played Rochester to a 0-0 draw in a non-conference contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Herons are now 1-1-1 on the season.
William Smith dominated the stat sheet finishing the game with a 26-4 edge in shots and a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks. However, the Herons were unable find the back of the net as Rochester's Emma Schechter finished the game.
Sarah Gray had the game's first opportunity in the sixth minute, but Schechter made a diving stop. In the 26th minute,
Amanda Adams had a shot stopped by Schechter.
Rochester's (1-1-1) lone chance in the first half was turned aside by
Kirsten Nelson, who was making her first collegiate start.
In the second half, the Herons ramped up the pressure looking for the go-ahead goal. In the 53rd minute,
Julia Keogh had a chance ticketed for the lower left corner stopped by the Rochester goalie. Just over a minute later, Gray had a shot smothered by Schechter. In the 72nd minute, Adams opportunity from 20 yards out punched over the crossbar at the last second.
The Yellowjackets best scoring chance of the game came in the 61st minute. Lexi Bostley broke into the box and chipped a shot towards cage. Nelson punched the chance harmlessly over the crossbar. In the 88th minute, Syd Coggins fired a shot on target that was smothered by Nelson.
William Smith had all four shots in overtime. In the first overtime session,
Sheila McQuillen and
Maddie Montgomery had shots redirected over the crossbar.
Nelson played all 110 minutes in goal and made three saves as she earned her first career shutout. Schechter played all 110 minutes in the Rochester goal.
William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 12, when they welcome Arcadia to Cozzens Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
