Keogh’s brace powers William Smith past Arcadia 6-1

GENEVA, N.Y.— William Smith College forward Julia Keogh scored a pair of goals as the second-ranked Herons rolled to a 6-1 victory over Arcadia, which was receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll, on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With the win, the Herons are now 2-1-1 on the season.

After playing 110 scoreless minutes on Saturday, William Smith wasted little time finding the back of the net this afternoon. In the eighth minute, Keogh one-timed a crossing pass from Sheila McQuillen past the Arcadia goalie and across the goal line. The Herons next two goals came off corner kicks. In the 15th minute, Merilyn Hinrichs picked up a bouncing ball at the penalty spot and buried the scoring opportunity. Janne Knieke was credited with an assist on the goal. Just over 10 minutes later, Julia Berg headed home a Marissa Mastracco corner kick to give William Smith a 3-0 advantage.

In the 42nd minute, Lindsay Ringbloom had a chance to get her name on the scoresheet but her shot towards the lower left corner of the cage was stopped Gabby Green.

Arcadia (2-2-0) had its best opportunity of the first half in the 23rd minute, but Morgan Giordano's shot missed the left post.

In the 50th minute, Keogh extended William Smith's lead to four goals with her second goal of the game. She collected a pass from McQuillen and slipped a shot across the goal line. It was Keogh's team-leading sixth goal of the season. In the 68th minute, Emma Faso pocketed her second goal of the season to extend the lead to five. Hinrichs was credited with an assist on the goal. Hinrichs' shot was stopped by Julia Mendez. Faso pounced on the rebound and chipped the ball into the back of the net. Julie Medina wrapped up the scoring for the Herons in the 77th minute. Following a handball in the box, she stepped up and converted the penalty kick attempt. It was her first collegiate goal.

Kylee Shea broke up the shutout attempt in the 88th minute. Off of a free kick, she picked up a loose ball and sent it across the goal line. Caroline Weirich was awarded an assist on the tally.

Kirsten Nelson earned her first collegiate victory, playing all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith. Green and Mendez each played 45 minutes in the Arcadia goal. Green started and made three saves; Mendez played the final 45 minutes and made seven saves.

William Smith finished the game with a 23-4 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

The Herons will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 15, when they welcome Alfred to Cozzens Field. The game against the Saxons is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
