Game Recap: William Smith Field Hockey | | Ken DeBolt

Late Heron rally falls short at Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team scored three goals in the fourth quarter, but came up short in its quest to hand SUNY Cortland its first loss of the season at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex this afternoon. The Red Dragons used the first three quarters to build a comfortable 5-0 lead and held on for the 5-3 win, improving to 6-0. The Herons slipped to 3-3.

Elizabeth Jacobia led William Smith with two goals while Jamie Snyder scored twice to pace Cortland. The Red Dragons had a slim 14-13 edge in shots while the Herons had an 11-9 advantage in penalty corners.

Cortland entered the match having outscored its first five opponents 24-3 and none of the first five had scored more than once against the Red Dragons.

Cortland opened the scoring the seventh minute with Keirra Ettere one-timing a feed from Hanna Corrigan past goalie Kristen McCormick. Five minutes into the second quarter Corrigan made it 2-0, firing home a tough angle shot from the right side. The Red Dragons took the two-goal lead into halftime.

Less than a minute into the second half, Lilly Fox, who assisted on Corrigan's goal, scored a goal of her own to make it a 3-0 game. Snyder scored both of her goals late in the frame for a seemingly comfortable lead with 15 minutes remaining.

Jacobia broke up the shutout bid in the 50th minute, one-timing a pass from Mackenzie Wodka. In the 55th minute, Anna Rider finished a scramble in front of the cage for her first goal of the season. Four minutes later, Jacobia deflected in her team-leading fourth goal of the season off a shot by McKenna Williams.

Megan McGuinness played the full 60 minutes in goal for Cortland, making six saves to earn the win. McCormick also made six saves on 11 shots on goal in 43:28. Stephanie Stone played the final 16:32 for the Herons and stopped the lone shot she faced.

William Smith will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 22, traveling to Clinton, New York, to take on Hamilton. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
