Continentals top Herons 3-1

McCormick makes career-high 8 saves in goal

CLINTON, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team got a career-high eight saves from goalie Kristen McCormick, but Hamilton College built a 2-0 halftime lead on the way to a 3-1 victory on its home field. She made eight saves in the game, including four in the first quarter.

Hamilton (4-1) carried the play in the first quarter, but McCormick turned away the first three shots she faced. The Continentals earned a penalty corner in the 11th minute and took advantage of the opportunity. Maura Holden scored off an assist from Keeley Duran. Hamilton outshot William Smith 7-0 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Hamilton kept the pressure on, breaking through a second time in the 24th minute. On another penalty corner, Hannah Dillon took a shot that was blocked by a William Smith defender. Emma Liebegott collected the rebound and fired it home for a 2-0 lead.

The Herons (3-4) halved their deficit on a penalty corner with two and a half minutes left in the third quarter. Kate Barilla sent a pass from the top of the circle to the left post, where Elizabeth Jacobia fired in her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Thirty seconds into the fourth quarter, Hamilton restored its two-goal advantage on yet another penalty corner. Duran scored the day's final goal with Kiera Wax and Lexi Takashima earning the assists.

William Smith managed two shots on goal down the stretch, but couldn't push another shot by Continental goalie Maggie Reville who finished with four saves.

Hamilton finished the match with a 20-9 advantage in shots and a 9-4 edge in penalty corners.

The Herons will return home for the start of Liberty League play. William Smith hosts the University of Rochester (5-2) on Saturday, Sept. 25. The match is scheduled to start at noon on McCooey Field.
