Statesmen, Tigers battle to scoreless draw

GENEVA, N.Y.- The Hobart College soccer team and Rochester Institute of Technology battled to a scoreless draw on a water-logged Cozzens Field this afternoon. The game was the Liberty League opener for both teams.
 
In an evenly played contest, the Statesmen (3-3-1, 0-0-1) finished the game with a 17-11 edge in shots. The Tigers (4-2-2, 0-0-1) earned a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
 
The goalkeepers were the story of this afternoon's conference contest. Guillermo Castaneda Chang played all 110 minutes in the Hobart goal. He made five saves as he earned the first shut out of his collegiate career. Jason Trapp started and played all 110 minutes in the RIT goal and made eight saves.
 
In the third minute, the Tiger's Jonathan Cohen had the game's first chance. His shot from 20 yards out was punched aside by Castaneda Chang. Four minutes later, Castaneda Chang stopped a shot from Jaden Longdon. Mick van Timmeren had Hobart's best chance in the opening 45 minutes. His header off a corner kick was stopped by Trapp.
 
In the second half, the Statesmen recorded the first three shots on target. Luke Ryan had the best chance in the 63rd minute. His shot from 25 yards out was punched aside by Trapp. In the 90th minute, Castaneda Chang made a diving stop on a shot from Tommy Reed to force overtime.
 
In the first extra session, Bret Kaemmerlen had the best scoring chance of the game. He fired a shot at the right goal post from inside the six-yard box. Castaneda Chang reacted quickly and made a diving save.
 
In the 108th minute, Matty Habersaat nearly won the game for Hobart, but his header just missed the left goal post.
 
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 25, when it heads to Skidmore. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, New York
