GENEVA, N.Y.—The University of Rochester got off to a fast start and cruised to a 6-0 Liberty League victory over William Smith College on McCooey Field this afternoon. The Yellowjackets improved to 6-2 overall, 1-0 in the conference, while the Herons fall to 3-5, 0-1.
Amanda Strenk and Karina Bridger led Rochester with two goals apiece. Juney Lee and Leona Fisher each scored once. Abigail Waldron played the first half in goal for the visitors and was credited with the win without making a save. Helen Schmitter made one save in the second half.
Rochester was firing on all cylinders early. The Yellowjackets fired home three goals in just over three minutes to chase William Smith starting goalie
Kristen McCormick just 6:25 into the match. Bridger scored on the first shot of the match just 3:04 in. About two minutes later, Strenk drove a shot inside the left post on a penalty corner for a 2-0 lead. She netted her second goal 43 seconds later, converting a penalty stroke.
Stephanie Stone came on in relief of McCormick. With two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Lee scored on a high arcing shot from the left side that found its way into the cage inside the far post.
Bridger made it 5-0 on a penalty corner in the 21st minute. A William Smith defender blocked Rochester's initial shot on the corner, but Bridger collected the rebound and her fourth goal of the season.
Fisher wrapped up the day's scoring with her goal in the 44th minute. Stone finished with one save.
Brit Foster played the fourth quarter in the William Smith goal. She did not face a shot.
The Herons had their best scoring chances of the day in the fourth quarter.
Rebecca Mantione lofted a shot over the crossbar. A short time later, William Smith fired a pass from the left side that went all the way across the goal mouth without any player getting a stick on it. The best change of the day belong to
Mackenzie Wodka, who dribbled through the defense and was one-on-one with Schmitter, but she made the stop when Wodka tried to slip a shot inside the left post.
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 2, when the Herons visit Union College for a Liberty League game that is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
