COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—The William Smith College field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season at No. 15 Ursinus College this afternoon. The Bears shut out the Herons 6-0.
Amanda Groeling led the home team with a hat trick. Mary Lauren Franz added a goal and two assists.
Ursinus (1-1) got off to a fast start, scoring three times in the first quarter, including Groeling's first tally which was assisted by Franz. In the second quarter, Groeling and Franz scored back-to-back goals less than a minute apart to make it a 5-0 game. Groeling tacked on her final goal about three minutes later.

Kristen McCormick made four saves in just over 23 minutes of work.
Stephanie Stone came on in relief, turning away six of the seven shots she faced.
The Herons will return home to host the William Smith Classic Sept. 11 and Sept. 12. They will face Manhattanville at 10:30 a.m. in Saturday's opener followed by Lebanon Valley vs. St. Lawrence at 2 p.m.
