CANTON, N.Y.—The No. 20 ranked William Smith College field hockey team earned its first Liberty League win of the season with a 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence this afternoon. The Herons now sit at 8-2 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League.
Saturday's matchup between the Herons and the Saints did not disappoint. William Smith outshot St. Lawrence 10(9)-5(3) on the day with graduate student
Emily Leonard leading the way with four shots, all of which were on goal. Junior
Kristen McCormick played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons, recording one save.
MATCH MOMENTS:
- 7:39 into the first quarter Leonard would break through for the first goal of the game. Senior Lauren Jackson would be credited with the assist on the goal.
- Under two minutes into the second quarter, Leonard would strike again. This time from the penalty stroke mark. Leonard now sits at 12 goals on the season.
- Junior Sofia Pattillo would round out the scoring for the Herons at the 18:47 mark. Pattillo now sits at seven goals on the season
- The Herons and Saints would battle back and forth for the remainder of the game ending in two goals for the Saints coming off the sticks of Maggie Green and Suzanne L'Hommedieu. The late offensive push would not be enough for the Saints as the time ran out giving the Herons their second road win of the season.

"We did a great job of capitalizing on opportunities early and connecting on inside-outside passes," said Head Coach Sophie Riskie '07. "We made some adjustments to our defensive strategy in the second half as St. Lawrence was hitting through. They fought hard and are always tough at home. Today was a great first conference win! "
