Mantione's golden goal lifts William Smith over RPI

TROY, N.Y.— The William Smith College field hockey team earned its third Liberty League victory of the season by defeating RPI 2-1 in overtime at Ned Harkness Field this afternoon. The Herons now sit at 11-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Liberty League.

The game winning goal came off the stick of sophomore Rebecca Mantione just 2:29 into the first overtime to life the Herons over the Engineers.

MATCH MOMENTS:
  • After 21:45 of scoreless action, the Engineers would strike first. Rachel Banister would record the goal for RPI after she knocked in a rebound during a scramble in front of the net.
  • Less than five minutes later the Herons would respond with a goal of their own. Senior Mary Kate Breward would capitalize off the Herons 10th penalty corner of the game, earning her second goal of the season. Graduate student Emily Leonard was credited with the assist on the goal.
  • The Herons continued to apply pressure in the second half, recording 10 shots and three penalty corners but would be denied a second half goal.
  • Just 2:29 into the first overtime period, Mantione would find the back of the net to lift the Herons to its 11th victory of the season. Leonard would be credited with her second assist of the night and third of the season.
  • William Smith outshot RPI 23-4 in the victory.
  • Junior Kristen McCormick played all 63 minutes in goal for the Herons, recording two saves on the night
UP NEXT:
The Herons will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 16, when they host Vassar at 1 p.m. in a conference matchup at McCooey Field.
