Herons earn 5th conference win with sweep of Union

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College volleyball team defeated Union 3-0 this afternoon to earn their fifth conference win of the season. The Herons now sit at 14-5, with a 5-2 record in the Liberty League. With the win, the Herons clinched a home playoff match to be played on Nov. 1.
 
Leading the way for the Herons was first-year Malya Sayre with 12 kills on 22 swings, hitting .500 on the match.
 
MATCH MOMENTS:
  • William Smith controlled the tempo in set one, hitting .480 as a team and keeping the Dutchwomen to a -.040 hitting percentage. The offensive dominance would lead the Herons to a 25-8 win in set one.
  • First-year Marin Montagne recorded four kills in set two, as the Herons hit .444 as a team. For the second time of the match, the Herons kept the Dutchwomen to a negative hitting percentage (-.095) and took the set, 25-9.
  • Union would gain momentum in set three, but the Heron defense continued to show strong, keeping the Dutchwomen to a .037 hitting percentage. William Smith completed their second sweep of the weekend with a 25-14 victory in set three.
MATCH STATS:
  • Sayre led the Herons with 12 kills (.500), followed by Montagne with nine (.571).
  • Sophomore Elaina Wamhoff recorded 31 assists, two service aces and two kills (.222).
  • First-years Jaylynn McCarthy, Cydney Fernandez and Paige Madison all recorded six digs in the win for William Smith.
  • McCarthy led the Herons with two blocks, followed by Sayre and sophomore Elizaveta Telepova with one each.
 
COACHES CORNER:
 
"What an amazing accomplishment for this team to lock in the third seed in our inaugural season," Head coach Derryk Williams said. "We are playing our highest level of volleyball right now and are only getting better. Elaina had an amazing week and led our team to a ridiculous .450+ hitting clip! I am very excited to see where we go from here."

William Smith will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 28, when they head to Potsdam to take on SUNY Geneseo at 3 p.m.
