Wodka's late goal lifts Herons over #17 Continentals

GENEVA, N.Y.— Senior Mackenzie Wodka scored in the 59th minute to lift the William Smith College field hockey team over No. 17 Hamilton in a nonconference showdown this evening at McCooey Field. The Herons move to 14-3 on the season while the Continentals fall to 8-7.
 
With the win over the Continentals, the Herons earn their third victory over nationally ranked opponents this season and record their 11th victory at home, keeping a perfect 11-0 record on McCooey Field during the regular season.

Sophomore Rebecca Mantione and Wodka led the Herons with three shots each.

MATCH MOMENTS:
  • Just 4:55 into the game, the Herons got on the board. Graduate student Emily Leonard recorded her 14th goal of the season after capitalizing on a penalty corner. Wodka was credited with the assist.
  • The Herons and Continentals traded possession throughout the remainder of the first half, with Hamilton leading 3-2 in shots at the half.
  • The Continentals tied the game at the 39:11 mark off the stick of Hannah Dillon, who capitalized on a penalty corner for Hamilton. Kiera Wax and Camille Donaghey were credited with the assists.
  • With 1:56 left in regulation, the Herons scored their second goal of the game off a penalty corner. After a scramble in front of the net, Wodka would fire off two shots on goal, with the second beating the Hamilton goalie, securing the victory for the Herons.
  • Junior Kristen McCormick played all 60 minutes in net for the Herons, recording two saves on the night.
COACHES CORNER:

"I'm so proud of this team for finishing the regular season undefeated at home!" Head Coach Sophie Riskie '07 said. "Hamilton has a lot of speed and played a very good game tonight. We supported each other really well and finished the opportunities we had."
 
UP NEXT:

The Herons will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they head to Grantham, Pennsylvania, to take on No. 8 Messiah at noon.
