#5 William Smith wins 4th straight, downs Clarkson 2-0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team scored a goal in each half as it knocked off Clarkson 2-0 in a Liberty League match at Hantz Turf Field this afternoon. With their fourth straight shutout, the Herons are now 8-1-2 on the season with a 4-0-1 record in conference play.
 
Kirsten Nelson played all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith and made two saves. Molly DiCaprio made eight saves in goal for the Golden Knights (5-5-2, 0-3-1).
 
KEY STATS:
  • The Herons had a 23-2 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
  • Clarkson played 73 minutes with 10 players after an early red card.
  • William Smith is 35-0-0 all-time against Clarkson and has won the last 13 straight shutouts against the Golden Knights.
 
FIRST HALF:
  • Ruth Hotaling opened the scoring in the 18th minute. She fired a free kick from 20 yards out into the lower left corner of the cage. It was Hotaling's first collegiate goal.
  • Two minutes later Hotaling had a chance to add a goal, but DiCaprio made a stop.
  • Clarkson's Sarah Kohls had the Golden Knight's best chance, but Nelson dove to her right and made the save.
 
SECOND HALF:
  • The Herons held Clarkson without a shot in the second half.
  • In the 59th minute, Emma Faso's shot that was ticketed for the lower right corner of the cage was stopped by DiCaprio
  • Katrine Berg extended William Smith's lead to 2-0 with her fourth goal of the season. She blasted a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the right side of the cage. Ava Ruppersberger was credited with an assist on the goal.
 
UP NEXT:
The Herons will be back in action tomorrow when they wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule against Plattsburgh State. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
