Herons down Golden Eagles 57-55 to earn first win of season

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team defeated Brockport this afternoon 57-55, to earn its first win of the season. The Herons improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-1.
 
Junior Brooke Jarvis led the Herons with 16 points, shooting 35.7% from the floor, while senior Lauren DeVaney posted a season-high 11 rebounds in the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In their 32nd meeting in program history, the Herons earned their 18th victory over the Golden Eagles in dramatic fashion.
  • The back-and-forth action started early between William Smith and Brockport, with the first quarter ending tied at 11. The Herons shot 26.7% compared to the Golden Eagles 30.8% to start the game.
  •  Sophomore Molly Walsh posted five points in the first quarter, including a clutch three-pointer to give the Herons an early lead.
  • The battle continued through the second quarter, with the Herons shooting 66.7% from the free throw line. Jarvis hit a three pointer with one second remaining in the half to lift William Smith to a two-point lead heading into the third quarter.
  • DeVaney came up big in the third quarter, posting six points and four rebounds on her way to her first double-double of the season. She went 4/4 from the free throw line to help the Herons to a 43-37 lead heading into the fourth.
  • The Herons would maintain their lead for the remaining ten minutes despite several pushes from the Golden Eagles. William Smiths' biggest lead of the game came with 7:30 left in the fourth, when junior Fiona Horan's layup extended the lead to ten.
  • Brockport's Anna Felice would hit a three pointer with four seconds remaining to bring the Golden Eagles back within two, but the Herons would wind down the clock to collect their first victory of the season.

"We had multiple players step up at different points throughout the game," Head Coach Lindsay Sharman said. "We kept our composure down the stretch and fought for every single possession. We stayed together from beginning to end and it was a great team win!"

The Herons will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 22, when they host the University of Rochester in their home-opener in Bristol Gym. The double header is set to begin with the Herons at 6 p.m., followed by the Statesmen at 8 p.m.
