GENEVA, N.Y—The top-ranked Hobart College hockey team defeated 14th-ranked Colby College 2-1 in a non-conference contest at The Cooler. With the win, the Statesmen extend their winning streak to 12 games to start the season. The Mules fall to 6-2 on the year.
Sophomore forward
Matthew Iasenza factored into both goals, finishing the game with two points.
Damon Beaver made 14 saves as he picked up his seventh win of the season. Andy Beran made 29 saves in the Colby goal.
KEY STATS
- Hobart finished the game with a 31-15 advantage in shots on goal.
- Neither team scored on the power play. The Statesmen were 0-for-5 and the Mules were 0-for-4 with the man advantage. Hobart did score a short-handed goal in the game.
- With today's victory, Hobart extended its winning streak to 12 games. The current unbeaten streak matches the second-longest in program history.
FIRST PERIOD
- Hobart dominated the opening frame, outshooting Colby 14-2.
- Zach Tyson opened the scoring at the 3:51 mark of the first period. He collected a cross-ice pass from Iasenza and tucked a shot inside the right goalpost. It was Tyson's fifth goal of the season. Artem Buzoverya was also awarded an assist on the goal.
- Jared Patterson nearly gave the Statesmen a two-goal lead 15 seconds later but he rang a shot off of the goalpost.
SECOND PERIOD
- Despite being outshot 9-6 in the second period, Colby held a territorial edge in the middle stanza.
- Just past the three-minute mark, Luke Aquaro had a chance stopped by Beran.
- Dan Juzych had a chance to tie the game for Colby, but his shot was saved by Beaver. He picked up his own rebound and fired another shot toward goal that was blocked by Cooper Swift.
- Iasenza gave Hobart a 2-0 lead at the 17:04 mark of the second period. The puck popped out of a scrum along the boards in the Satesmen's defensive end. Iasenza picked up the loose puck raced the length of the ice, deked around a defender and ripped a shot off of Beran's glove and into the net.
THIRD PERIOD
- Colby scored the lone goal of the final period. Henry Molson crashed the net following a Beaver save and poked the loose puck across the goal line. His third goal of the season was assisted by Clay Korbi and Nick Stapleton.
- The Mules had a couple of chances to tie the game late in the frame but were unable to slide another shot past Beaver.
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action tomorrow, Dec. 31, when they welcome Salve Regina to The Cooler. The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. It will be the de facto championship game for the Hockey Helpers Shootout. The Seahawks beat Elmira 4-3 this evening.
