Lucky 13! Shell’s OT strike sends #1 Hobart past Salve Regina

Hobart wins 13th straight game

GENEVA, N.Y—Sophomore Shane Shell scored 2:04 into the overtime period to send top-ranked Hobart past Salve Regina 2-1 in a non-conference contest at The Cooler this afternoon. With the win, the Statesmen are now 13-0-0 on the season.

The line of Shell (1g 1a), sophomore Luke Aquaro (2a) and Jonah Alexander (1g, 1a) led the way for Hobart with two points each. Mavrick Goyer made a career-high 27 saves as he notched his sixth win of the season. Anthony Del Tufo made 46 saves in the Salve Regina goal.

THE WINNER
  • With 2:56 remaining in the overtime period, Shell one-timed a shot from the slot over a diving Del Tufo into the upper right corner of the cage. Aquaro and Alexander were credited with assists on the goal. Alexander started the play in the defensive zone and hit Aquaro with an outlet pass. Aquaro carried the puck through the neutral zone and held up in the right faceoff circle just long enough to send the pass across the ice to Shell.
  • Both teams had one shot on goal in the extra session.

THE STREAK
  • With today's win, Hobart extended its winning streak to 13 games. Thirteen straight wins mark the longest winning streak in program history and match the longest unbeaten streak in Hobart history.
  • Hobart's previous longest winning streak was 10 games.

KEY STATS
  • Hobart finished the game with a 48-28 edge in shots on goal.
  • Neither team scored on the power play. Hobart was 0-for-2 and Salve Regina was 0-for-1 with the man advantage. The Statesmen have not allowed a power-play goal since Nov. 4.

THE OTHER GOALS
  • The Statesmen opened the scoring 18 seconds into the game. Alexander snapped a shot from the low slot past Del Tufo for his eighth goal of the season. Aquaro and Shell were awarded assists on the goal.
  • Just under three minutes later, the Seahawks tied the game on Logan Calder's fourth goal of the year. He fired a centering pass past Goyer. Walter Baumann and Seth Benson were awarded assists on the goal.

CLOSE CALLS
  • The Seahawks had a flurry of chances late in the opening frame but could not stuff a second shot past Goyer.
  • Aquaro had a chance to give the Statesmen a 2-1 lead, but his shot was stopped by Del Tufo's glove.
  • With 1:27 remaining in the second period, Salve Regina thought it had taken a 2-1 lead, but Joseph Kile's shot from the right faceoff circle was stopped by Goyer. The puck disappeared into the goalie's jersey but stayed out of the net.
  • Aquaro had a chance to win the game in regulation with just over eight minutes remaining. His shot from inside the right faceoff circle cleanly beat Del Tufo but rang off the crossbar.
