GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team trailed visiting St. Lawrence University by just four with under six minutes remaining, but the Saints scored the final 16 points of the contest on their way to a 66-46 Liberty League victory in Bristol Gym tonight.
The Statesmen got a pair of 10-point efforts from junior
Jackson Meshanic and first-year
Aidan Rodgers. Meshanic just missed a double-double, grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Hobart shot just 34.4% from the floor and struggled from deep, where they made just 4-of-23. The Statesmen were awarded just a single trip to the free throw line.
SLU put three players in double digits, led by Luck Hicks' game-high 22 points. He was 6-of-9 from the floor, 3-for-4 from 3-point range and 7-for-7 at the line. Trent Adamson posted 14 points and a team-high eight boards. Gavin Macaulay finished with 11 points. The Saints shot 42.6% from the floor, including 48.1% in the second half. St. Lawrence was 5-of-12 from beyond the arc and went 15-of-19 at the free throw line.
Feeding off the energy of the Alumni Weekend crowd, Hobart jumped out to an early 16-6 lead. Senior
Jack Lesure and first-year
Pat Healy both drained triples during the run and Rodgers capped it with a driving layup that gave the home team a 10-point lead with under eight minutes left in the half.
St. Lawrence countered with back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers, the first by Macaulay and the next two by Hicks, to make it a 1-point game. It was the start of a 14-2 run that put the Saints up by two. The teams played the final five minutes of the half to a draw, sending SLU into halftime with a 27-25 lead.
Hicks led all first half scorers with 11 points. Rodgers had a team-high seven points for Hobart.
St. Lawrence (12-7, 6-6) stretched its lead to as many as 12 in the early part of the second half, but the Statesmen fought back. Meshanic's layup near the six-minute mark, trimmed the Saints' lead to 50-46. From there, Hobart missed its final six shots from the floor (and its lone free throw attempt), while SLU went 5-of-7 from the floor and made all six of its free throws.
The Statesmen (6-11, 3-7) will return to action Saturday, Feb. 5, when Clarkson (5-14, 2-10) visits Bristol Gym. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. The Golden Knights suffered an 87-80 loss at RIT tonight. St. Lawrence will tipoff at 4 p.m. Saturday at RIT.
