Hobart downs Luther, Trinity 7-2

ORLANDO, Fla.—The Hobart College tennis team posted a pair of 7-2 victories at the USTA National Campus today as it improved to 3-1 in Florida. The Statesmen defeated Luther this morning and Trinity this afternoon. With the wins, Hobart is now 6-4 on the season.
 
In the morning match against the Norse (6-8), Hobart took a 2-1 lead, winning in No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Harry Lyu and Troy Steiner bested Nando Melo and Luke Westholder, 8-5, in the No. 2 spot. It was Lyu and Steiner's seventh doubles win of the season. Winter Fagerberg and Jacob Linares knocked off Joaquim Fernandes and Ricky Portilla, 8-4, at No. 3. Luther earned its lone point with an 8-5 victory in the No. 1 spot.
 
Hobart won five of the six singles matches. Sean Pesin, Harry Lyu, Hyat Oyer and Thomas Shung won their matches in straight sets. Pesin topped Max Loen, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 2 spot. It was Pesin's fourth win of the season. In the No. 3 spot, Lyu defeated Joaquim Fernandes, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. Oyer cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 4. Shung logged a 6-1, 7-5 win over Dylan Wiemers in the No. 5 spot. It was Shung's seventh singles win of the season. In the No. 6 spot, Jett Wright rallied to defeat Eli Young, 4-6, 6-3, 10-3. Wright is now 2-0 in singles play in his senior year. The Norse logged their lone singles point with a win in the No. 1 spot.
 
Hobart also took a 2-1 lead after doubles play against the Bantams (1-2). The Statesmen again won the matches in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Lyu and Steiner ran their winning streak to three matches with an 8-4 win in the No. 2 spot. They are a team-best 8-2 in doubles play. Jack Ledford and Shung teamed up for an 8-5 win in the No. 3 spot. Ledford and Shung are 2-0 as a team. Wright and Pesin were edged in the No. 1 spot, 8-7 (7-3).
 
The Statesmen sealed the victory with six singles victories. Linares, Oyer and Lyu won in straight sets. Linares rolled past Kartik Erodula, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 4 spot. The win was Linares' fourth of the season. Oyer bested Pierce Rutledge, 6-0, 6-2, to improve to 9-2 overall this season. He has won three straight matches. Lyu clinched the overall victory for Hobart with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jack Ginter in the No. 3 spot. Lyu is 9-6 so far this season with a 2-1 mark in the No. 3 spot. Steiner notched his fifth singles win of the season, topping Charles Kilborn, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 in the No. 5 spot. Fagerberg logged his seventh win of the season when he beat Ross DeRose in the No. 1 spot. They split the first two sets, 6-2, 5-7, before DeRose retired.
 
Hobart will wrap up its trip through the Sunshine State tomorrow, March 23, when it takes on Grinnell. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
