Statesmen clip Pioneers 5-4 in Florida finale

ORLANDO, Fla.—The Hobart College tennis team concluded its Spring Break trip with a tightly contested 5-4 win over Grinnell at the USTA National Campus this afternoon. With the win, the Statesmen are now 7-4 overall this season and wrapped up their trip through the Sunshine State with a 4-1 record. The Pioneers fall to 5-7 on the season.
 
Hobart took a 2-1 lead in the match at the conclusion of doubles play. Grinnell opened doubles play with an 8-6 win in the No. 2 spot. The Statesmen tied the match with an 8-6 victory in the No. 3 spot. Hyat Oyer and Guthrie Speers improved to 5-2 on the season with their victory over Karch Knoll and Aiden Klass. In the No. 1 spot, Harry Lyu and Troy Steiner edged Bowen Mince and Sam Rudenberg, 8-7 (7-4). With their fourth straight victory, Steiner and Lyu are now 9-2 in doubles play this season.
 
The singles matches were also tightly contested wth five of the six matches needing a super breaker to decide the outcome. Hobart logged wins in the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 spots of the lineup. With the match tied 4-4, Steiner clinched the overall victory with his win in the No. 3 spot. He beat Jonah Gilmore, 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 10-2. It was Steiner's third straight win and his sixth victory of the season. Oyer extended his win streak to four matches, besting Knoll, 3-6, 6-2, 10-3. It was Oyer's team-leading 10th win of the season. In the No. 6 spot, Jack Ledford rallied to beat Henry Bridgers, 2-6, 6-4, 10-3.  Ledford is now 3-2 on the season.
 
Hobart will be back in action on Sunday, March 27, when it hosts 28th-ranked New York University. The match with the Violets is scheduled for 1 p.m.
