GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory over Union in Bristol Field House this afternoon. With their third straight win, the Statesmen are now 11-5 overall and 2-1 in Liberty League play this season.
Hobart swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the match.
Troy Steiner and
Harry Lyu opened the match with their team-leading 11th win of the season. They knocked off Dimitris Binopoulos and Ioannis Binopoulos, 8-4. The Statesmen picked up 8-5 victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.
Sean Pesin and
Jett Wright defeated Ben Jacobs and Aidan O'Brien in the top spot. They are 6-4 overall this season, playing all 10 matches in the No. 1 spot.
Thomas Shung and
Jack Ledford bested Cameron Klepper and Bailey Mcatee in the No. 3 spot. Shung and Ledford are 4-2 as a duo this year.
Steiner and
Hyat Oyer clinched the overall victory with wins in the No. 4 and 5 spots, respectively. Oyer knocked off Ian Schunk, 6-1, 6-0, for his team-best 14th singles win of the year. Steiner gave the Statesmen a 5-0 lead with his ninth win of the year. He beat Dimitris Binopoulos, 6-0, 6-2.
Winter Fagerberg and Lyu extend Hobart's lead with straight-set victories at the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively. Fagerberg, who is the 25th-ranked singles player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's regional rankings, beat Ioannis Binopoulos, 6-1, 6-4. Fagerberg is 9-8 this year with a 7-6 mark in the No. 1 spot. Lyu dispatched Ben Jacobs, 6-3, 6-4. The win was Lyu's 12th of the year. In the closest match of the day,
Jacob Linares beat Aidan O'Brien, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. Linares is 7-7 on the season.
The Statesmen will be back in action Wednesday, April 13, when it takes on Rochester Institute of Technology. The match in Rochester is scheduled for 3 p.m.
