Maggie Bonomo and first-year
Isabelle Goings-Perrot won twice for the William Smith College tennis team, but the Herons were edged by Union 5-4 in a Liberty League contest in Bristol Field House this afternoon. With the loss, the Herons are 3-9 overall this season with a 0-3 record in conference play.
William Smith took an early 2-1 lead in the match with victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Union took a 1-0 lead thanks to an 8-0 victory in the No. 3 spot. Goings-Perrot and
Julia Pida tied the match in the No. 2 spot. They beat Hallie Katzman and Kate Hirnak, 8-1. Goings-Perrot and Pida are 6-6 as a doubles duo in 12 dual matches. Bonomo and
Audrey Camacho knocked off Marilena Karadimou and Rayna Katzman, 8-4, in the No. 1 spot. It was Bonomo and Camacho's ninth doubles. They are 9-7 overall with a 7-5 mark in the No. 1 spot.
The Dutchwomen (4-5, 2-3) took a 3-2 lead with straight-set singles wins at No. 5 and No. 4. Bonomo tied the match 3-3 with her victory in the No. 1 spot. She defeated Marilena Karadimou, 6-2, 7-5. Bonomo is a team-best 12-8 in singles play with a 7-5 mark at the top of the ladder. Goings-Perrot rallied to win her match with Kate Hirnak, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, in the No. 3 spot. With the win, Goings-Perrot improved to 11-7 overall on the season. Union clinched the victory with wins at No. 6 and No. 2.
William Smith will be back in action Tuesday, April 12, when it takes on Rochester Institute of Technology. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
