GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory over Ithaca in a Liberty League match in Bristol Field House this afternoon. The Statesmen swept singles play as it improved to 13-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Originally scheduled to be played at the HWS Tennis Center, the match was moved inside the field house due to high winds in the area.
Hobart took a 2-1 lead in the match thanks to doubles play.
Thomas Shung and
Jack Ledford opened the match with an 8-1 win over Nicolas Luis and Tyler Del Zoppo in the No. 3 spot. Shung and Ledford are 6-2, playing all eight matches in the No. 3 spot.
Jett Wright and
Sean Pesin edged Eric Dubilirer and Deon Kraft, 8-7 (7-5), in the No. 1 spot. Wright and Pesin have won three straight matches and are 8-4 overall this season. Ithaca (7-7, 1-4) earned its lone point in the No. 2 spot.
The Statesmen won five of the six singles matches in straight sets.
Troy Steiner gave Hobart a 3-1 lead with his victory in the No. 4 spot. He beat Kraft, 6-2, 6-2. Steiner has won four straight matches and is 11-5 overall this season with a 5-0 record in the No. 4 spot.
Harry Lyu bested Dubilirer, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3. Lyu is 14-9 overall and has won four straight matches.
Hyat Oyer clinched the overall victory in the No. 5 spot. He defeated Artem Khaybullin, 7-5, 6-3. Oyer has won five straight matches and is a team-best 16-3.
Winter Fagerberg, the Northeast Region's 25th ranked singles player, topped Luis, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 1 spot. Fagerberg is 10-8 on the year with an 8-6 record in the No. 1 spot. In the closest match of the day, Pesin rallied to beat Minos Stavrakas, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4. It was Pesin's fourth straight singles victory. Shung closed out the contest with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 6 spot. Shung is 9-6 on the season.
Hobart will be back in action next Saturday, April 23, when it welcomes Bard to Geneva. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
