Thoroughbreds slip past Statesmen 6-3

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College tennis team was edged by Skidmore 6-3 in a Liberty League match at the HWS Tennis Center this afternoon. The Statesmen, who are ranked 12th in the ITA Northeast Regional Rankings, are now 14-6 overall this season with a 6-2 record in Liberty League play. The Thoroughbreds, who are 14th in the Northeast Regional Rankings, are now 7-10 overall with a 6-2 mark in conference play.
 
Skidmore took a 2-1 lead out of doubles play, winning at No. 1 and No. 3. Jett Wright and Sean Pesin were clipped by Sergiu Celebidachi and John Rado, 8-7 (7-1). Celebidachi and Rado are the region's 12th-ranked doubles team. Hobart earned its doubles point in the No. 2 spot. Troy Steiner and Harry Lyu beat Brenden Jimenez and Zachary Portnoy, 8-7, (7-5). 
 
The Thoroughbreds won four of the six singles matches to clinch the overall victory. John Rado, the region's 22nd ranked singles player, edged Lyu, 6-4, 6-4 to give Skidmore a 3-1 lead. Hobart tied the match 3-3 with wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots. Hyatt Oyer defeated Tristan Thiebaut, 6-4, 6-3, for his team-leading 18th win of the year. He is 7-0 in the No 5 singles spot. Thomas Shung, who was playing in his final regular season match at the HWS Tennis Center, beat Joseph Wilkanowski 6-3, 6-4. It was Shung's 11th win of the year. The Thoroughbreds won in the No. 2 and No. 4 singles to make the match 5-3.  Winter Fagerberg, the region's 24th-ranked singles player was edged by Zach Portnoy, the region's 14th-ranked singles player, in the closest match of the day, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.
 
Hobart will be back in action next Saturday, April 30, when it heads to Poughkeepsie, New York, to take on Vassar. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m.
