Hobart downs Vassar 7-2 in regular season finale

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The Hobart College tennis team defeated Vassar College 7-2 in a Liberty League match up at the Josselyn Courts this afternoon. With the victory, the Statesmen wrap up their regular season with a 15-6 overall record and a 6-2 mark in conference play.
 
Hobart finished the season tied for second with Skidmore in the Liberty League standings, but the head-to-head loss with the Thoroughbreds knocked Hobart to the No. 3 seed.
 
Hobart swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Jett Wright and Sean Pesin defeated Mathew Yee and Arnav Agostinho, 8-4, in the No. 1 spot. With the win, Wright and Pesin improved to 10-5 as a doubles duo, playing all 15 matches in the top spot. Jack Ledford and Thomas Shung beat Arun Guruswamy and James Balon, 8-4, at No. 3. It was Ledford and Shung's seventh victory this season. Harry Lyu and Troy Steiner were in the closest match of the day, clipping Jay Wong and Benjamin Almquist 8-6.  Lyu and Steiner are a team best 14-7 this year.
 
Hobart won four of the six singles matches to secure the victory. Lyu picked up his 15th singles win of the year beating Vassar's Yee, 6-2, 6-3. Jacob Linares clinched the overall victory with a straight-sets win in the No. 4 singles spot. He beat Arun Guruswamy, 6-3, 6-2. Linares is 9-7 in his rookie campaign. Pesin and Winter Fagerberg superbreakers to claim their singles' points. Fagerberg dispatched Jay Wong, 6-2, 1-6, 10-7, in the No. 1 spot and Pesin bested Benjamin Almquist, 1-6, 6-3, 10-8, in the No. 3 spot. Fagerberg is 11-9 this year with a 9-7 record at the top of the singles ladder. Pesin is 9-7 overall this year. Hyat Oyer had his seven-match win streak snapped in a hard-fought battle in the No. 5 singles spot. He was edged by Arnav Agostinho, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.
 
The Liberty League Tennis Championship will take place next weekend, May 6-8, at Cornell's Reis Tennis Center. Hobart will take on the No. 6 seed in a first round match up.
