ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The Hobart College tennis team defeated the University of Rochester 6-3 in a non-conference match at Rochester's Lyman Tennis Courts this afternoon. With the win, the Statesmen are now 9-5 this season.
Hobart took an early 2-1 lead in the match at the conclusion of doubles play. In the No. 1 spot,
Jett Wright and
Sean Pesin cruised to an 8-1 victory over Runjia Fang and Kai Yuminaga. The win was Wright and Pesin's third straight victory. They are 5-3 in the No. 1 doubles spot. The Yellowjackets (6-5) tied the match with a victory in the No. 2 doubles spot. The Statesmen regained the lead thanks to
Thomas Shung and
Jack Ledford's 8-5 win in the No. 3 spot. Shung and Ledford are now 3-1 as duo this spring.
Shung extended Hobart's lead to 3-1 with a win in the No. 6 singles spot. He cruised past Kei Ogawa, 6-1, 6-1. With the win, Shung is now 8-6 this season. In the No. 2 spot, Pesin swept Fang, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. Pesin is now 5-6 on the season. First-year
Hyat Oyer clinched the victory for the Statesmen in the No. 5 spot. After dropping the first set, he rallied past Adrian Zhang, 0-6, 6-4, 7-5. It was Oyer's team-leading 12th singles win of the season. He is 2-0 in the No. 5 singles spot and 12-3 overall on the year.
Winter Fagerberg also rallied to win his match in the No. 1 spot. He bested Pasquale Procaccino, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7. Fagerberg is now 8-8 in singles matches on the year. Rochester earned singles points in the No. 3 and No. 4 spot.
Hobart will be back in action, Saturday, April 9, when it heads to the North Country to take on St. Lawrence. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
