CANTON, N.Y.—The Hobart College tennis team won five of the six singles matches as it rallied for a 5-4 victory over St. Lawrence at the Sammis Tennis Courts this afternoon. With the victory, the Statesmen are now 10-5 overall this season with a 1-1 mark in Liberty League play.
The Saints (6-6, 2-3) took a 3-0 lead in the match thanks to a sweep of doubles play. All three matches needed a tiebreaker to decide. Nathan Turtledove and Ben Moolman slipped past
Jett Wright and
Sean Pesin 8-7 (7-5) in the No. 1 spot. Adam Heilbronner and Broderick Pinto edged
Troy Steiner and
Harry Lyu 8-7 (8-6) in the No. 2 spot. Nico Haet and John Hill-Edgar knocked off
Thomas Shung and
Jack Ledford 8-7 (7-3) at No. 3. The matches started outside but were moved indoors when it started to rain. When the venue changed, all three matches were 6-5. The surface switch did not benefit the Statesmen for the doubles matches.
Lyu started the comeback for Hobart, winning in straight sets in the No. 2 spot. He topped Moolman, 6-4, 6-1. With the victory, Lyu is now 11-9 on the season with a 1-1 mark in the No. 2 spot. Playing his first match in the No. 1 spot, Pesin cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Turtledove. Pesin is 6-6 overall this year.
Hyat Oyer tied the match 3-3 with his victory in the No. 5 singles spot. He rallied to defeat Heilbronner, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Oyer is a team-best 13-3 this season, including a 3-0 mark in the No. 5 singles spot.
Jacob Linares gave the Statesmen a 4-3 lead in the match with a victory in the No. 3 spot. He fell behind Nico Haet 4-1 in the first set but pulled out a 7-5, 6-4 victory. Linares is now 6-7 this year with a 3-3 mark in the No. 3 spot. Steiner clinched the overall victory. In the No. 4 spot, he bested Edwin Standberg, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Steiner is now 8-5 on the year. The Saints won in straight sets in the No. 6.
Hobart will be back in action tomorrow, April 10, when it welcomes Union to Bristol Field House. The Liberty League contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
