Statesmen host Seahawks Saturday in NEC showdown

4/7/2022 5:32:00 PM

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College lacrosse team will host Wagner College in a Northeast Conference game on Saturday, April 9. The opening faceoff on Boswell Field at Urick Stadium is scheduled for noon.

The game will be webcast on HWS All-Access with Live Stats on HWSAthletics.com. It will also be broadcast live on WEOS-FM (89.5.90.3 in Geneva).

Hobart lacrosse is partnering with the HWS Office of Title IX to promote Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) during the game. Representatives from Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes and the Office of Title IX will be in attendance at the game and the Statesmen will wear SAAM stickers on their helmets.

The Statesmen (2-5, 0-3) enter the game looking to snap a five-game slide. Hobart aims to bounce back from a 16-12 loss at Saint Joseph's last Saturday. The Statesmen entered the fourth quarter, trailing the Hawks by just one, but NEC front runners used an extra-man goal early in the final frame to spark a four-goal run to pull away. Ryan Archer and Bradley Simas each scored four goals to pace Hobart.

Archer leads the NEC and ranks ninth in the nation in points per game at 5.43. He leads the Statesmen in goals (15), assists (23) and points (38). Archer is one pace to finish the regular season with 36 assists and 65 points. Both totals would rank second on Hobart's Division I era single season list. Archer enters the weekend second in both career assists (87) and career points (163) chasing Chris Aslanian's DI era standards. Archer needs seven assists and 29 points to match Aslanian's three-year-old records.

Faceoff specialist Adam Shea is third in the NEC in faceoff winning percentage (.510) and second in ground balls per game (7.29). Defenseman Michael Christiansen leads the Statesmen with seven caused turnovers. Goalie Kevin Holtby has started all seven games, posting a 13.03 GAA and a .463 save percentage.

Wagner brings a 3-5 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the NEC to Geneva. The Seahawks got a game-high five points from attackman Stephen Dwyer in a 14-8 win over Sacred Heart last week. He leads Wagner with 22 points on 17 goals and five assists. Midfielder Aidan Clark is close behind with 21 points, including a team-high 18 goals.

The Seahawks have used seven different players at the faceoff X, winning 37.9%. Defensemen Brendan Higgins, Tommy Scarpello and Matt Morris share the team lead with 10 caused turnovers apiece. In goal, Danny Brady has started all eight games, recording a 9.77 GAA and a .551 save percentage.

The game will be the eighth meeting between the two programs. Hobart has each of the previous seven meetings, but three of those victories came in overtime. The Statesmen won on Staten Island last season 9-8 in overtime thanks to Simas' game winner 47 seconds into the extra session. Attackman Derrek Madonna led all players with five points on four goals and an assist. Dwyer scored four times to lead the Seahawks.
