Herons down the Wildcats 5-4 in dual match action

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College tennis team knocked off Daemen 5-4 in a tightly contested match inside Bristol Field House this afternoon. With the victory, the Herons are now 1-0 on the season in dual matches as the Wildcats fall to 0-2 on the season.
MATCH MOMENTS:
  • Sophomore Isabelle Goings-Perrot and first-year Haley Levine teamed up in the No. 1 spot defeating Frida Rubio and Yinett Del Leon of Daemen by a score of 8-7, winning the tiebreaker 7-3.
  • First-year Maddy Buck and junior Jamie Fine defeated Mackenzie Schayes and Ailish McDevitt in the No. 3 spot by a score of 8-3 rounding out the doubles score to 2-1 in favor of the Herons.
  • Goings-Perrot continued to look strong on the day as she defeated Kitsa Scime in the No.2 singles spot by a score of 6-4 and 4-2 bringing the Herons to 3 points on the day.
  • Buck took on Schayes in the No. 5 singles spot, winning in thrilling fashion. Schayes took the first match 6-4 followed by a 6-4 response in favor of Buck. Buck took the tiebreaker 7-3 to deliver the Herons its fourth point of the dual match.
  • Fine contributed again for the Herons with a 6-2 and 6-0 victory over McDevitt in the No. 6 singles spot, bringing William Smiths total to five wins in the dual match.

 
COACHES CORNER:
 " I think we did a nice job of managing our nerves in a very tight match," Assistant Coach Chip Fishback said. "Our No. 1 doubles team gave up a lead but then righted the ship and closed out their match in a tie break. Buck came back from three match points down to clinch the match for us. We are looking forward to next weekends action at the ITA Northeast Regionals."

William Smith will head to Clinton, NY to compete at the ITA Northeast Regionals on Sept. 23- Sept. 25.
