Alfred, N.Y.—The William Smith College volleyball team cruised to an 3-0 sweep of Alfred University at Terry S, Galanis Family Arena in the Herons' first ever contest.
Leading the way for the Herons was first-year
Malya Sayre with 15 kills on just 35 attempts (.229). Also adding impressive numbers were first-year
Hope Von Dohlen with eight kills on 20 attempts (.150) and sophomore
Elizaveta Telepova with seven kills on 20 attempts (.200).
MATCH MOMENTS:
- The Herons started hot in the first set as they won 25-15, hitting .222 as a team. The strong offensive start was complimented by brilliant defensive efforts keeping the Saxons hitting percentage in the negatives (-.061).
- In the second set, the Herons improved on their impressive hitting percentage which increased to .333 as they beat the Saxons 25-21. This was in large part due to sophomore setter Elaina Wamhoff , who had 29 assists on the night along with her team high two aces.
- The Herons defensive efforts helped close out the night as the team combined for eight blocks in the three set match. Leading the way for the Herons in blocks were Sayre (4), Jaylynn McCarthy (3) and Von Dohlen (2). Although the Saxons offense caught stride in the final set, the score finished at 25-22 in favor of the Herons.

Derryk Williams stated. "This group of young women has worked really hard so far and it showed. All 14 of our athletes were engaged and ready to win! The energy from our bench was unbelievable and we had some people really step up. I could not be happier with the way we started and we're looking forward to tomorrow!"
