Herons fall in midweek conference matchup at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— The William Smith College basketball team fell to Skidmore 69-38 this afternoon in a Liberty League matchup. The Herons fall to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference while the Thoroughbreds move to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
 
Junior Brooke Jarvis led the Herons with 12 points and four rebounds, while senior Lauren DeVaney chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds. First-year Faith Okoli made her presence known in the paint, grabbing a career-high eight rebounds in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jarvis opened up the scoring for the Herons, followed by points from sophomores Maddie Patrick and Molly Walsh to give William Smith an early 5-2 lead.
  • The Herons and Thoroughbreds would trade points for the remainder of the first, with senior Lauren DeVaney leading the way with four points and three rebounds.
  • First-year Faith Okoli added three rebounds to keep the Herons within three heading into the second quarter.
  • Sophomore Maddie Patrick came out hot in the second quarter, sinking two shots and drawing a charge for the Herons early on.
  • Skidmore responded with sharp shooting by Andi Levitz, who hit four three-pointers to extend the Thoroughbreds lead.
  • Jarvis responded with seven points of her own in the second quarter to keep Skidmore's lead to 13 going into the half.
  • Senior Kerstin Kelly opened up the half with a bucket for the Herons before the Thoroughbreds took control of the scoring.
  • William Smiths offense struggled to gain momentum in the final ten minutes but stepped up defensively, keeping Skidmore to just a 20% shooting percentage from the floor to close out the game.
  • The Thoroughbreds second quarter offensive burst was proven enough to secure their fifth conference victory of the season.

William Smith will continue its three-game road trip this weekend, when it heads to Bard to take on the Raptors at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13. The Herons will then take on Union on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m.
