Herons soar over Raptors 73-35

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— Four different Herons posted double digit points as the William Smith College basketball team defeated Bard 73-35 in Liberty League action this evening. The Herons move to 4-9 on the season and 2-4 in the conference, while the Raptors fall to 1-10 and 0-4 in conference play.
 
First-year Carly Scott led the Herons, posting a career-high 13 points and five rebounds while sophomore Maddie Patrick added 12 points and eight rebounds in the win. Senior Lauren DeVaney posted her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • William Smith started out hot, going on a 19-3 run against the Raptors. The Herons found crucial early points from Scott, DeVaney and Patrick to give William Smith the early advantage.
  • The Herons shot 60% from the floor in the first quarter, while keeping Bard to just 23.1% from the floor.
  • The Raptors responded in the second quarter outscoring William Smith 14-13 but couldn't cut into the Herons lead heading into the second half.
  • The Herons started out hot in the second half on a 9-0 run and finding points from junior Fiona Horan, Patrick and a clutch three-pointer by Scott.
  • William Smith maintained a 30-point lead heading into the final ten minutes of the game, allowing the Herons to rotate players in off the bench.
  • William Smith continued to play strong defense in the final ten minutes, keeping the Raptors to only seven points in the final ten minutes as they shot 16.7% from the floor.
  • The Herons finished with a season-high 62 rebounds to close out their second conference victory of the season.

"Tonight we showed great team defense and energy from beginning to end," Head Coach Lindsay Sharman said. "We had contributions from everyone on the team which is a great way to start our weekend."

William Smith will conclude its three-game road trip tomorrow as they head to Schenectady, New York, to take on Union College. The Liberty League matchup is set to tip off at 2 p.m.
