Southern Maine sneaks past William Smith 2-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College ice hockey team was edged by the University of Southern Maine 2-1 in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler. With the loss, The Herons fall to 7-9-1 overall and 5-6-0 in conference play.
 
Kayla Ketchabaw scored William Smith's goal. Erin Murray made 25 saves in just over 59 minutes of work in goal. The Huskies (8-8-0, 6-3-0) were led by Madison Chagnon, who had a goal and an assist. Haley McKim made 25 saves in goal for USM.
 
KEY STATS
  • The Huskies had a 27-26 edge in shots on goal.
  • Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play. 
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Chagnon opened the scoring at the 7:53 mark of the middle stanza. She split William Smith's defense, raced through the neutral zone and slipped a shot through Murray's legs. Her 14th goal of the season was assisted by Amanda Crowley and Maddy Young.
  • Just under a minute later, Oliva Stewart gave USM a 2-0 lead. She one-timed a shot past Murray for her fifth goal of the year. Saige MacLeod and Chagnon were awarded assists on the goal.
  • William Smith broke up the shutout bid just before the midway point of the game. Ketchabaw ripped a shot from the high slot past McKim for her seventh goal of the year. Julianna Gong and Emma Faso were awarded assists on the goal.
 
THE FINAL 20
  • The Herons controlled the third period, outshooting the Huskies 17-4.
  • William Smith's best chances to net the equalizer came with five minutes remaining in regulation. The Herons mounted shots on a power-play chance, but their attempts were stymied by the USM defense. Ally Stymiest compiled three blocked shots during the sequence.
  • William Smith had a 90-second 5-on-3 late in the frame but was unable to sneak a second shot past McKim.
 
 UP NEXT
The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, Jan. 14, when it concludes a four-game homestand against Salem State. The opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. at The Cooler.
