William Smith slides past Salem State 2-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College ice hockey scored a pair of goals in the second period as it defeated Salem State University 2-1 in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this afternoon. With the win, the Herons improve to 8-9-1 overall with a 6-6-0 record in conference play.
 
Four different players recorded a point in the victory for William Smith. Junior Annie Hauser made 22 saves as she earned the victory. Dana Smullen started in goal for the Vikings (3-9-1, 1-7-1). She made 33 saves in the losing effort.
 
KEY STATS
  • The Herons finished the game with a 35-23 edge in shots on goal.
  • Neither team scored on the power play. Salem State was 0-for-2 and William Smith was 0-for-3 with the extra skater.
  • This was the third straight William Smith game where all three goals in the contest were scored in the second period.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • William Smith opened the scoring just under two minutes into the second period. Mackenzie O'Neil collected a drop pass and rifled a shot from the slot past Smullen for her fifth goal of the season. Kayla Ketchabaw was awarded an assist on the goal.
  • Salem State tied the game 1-1 at the 12:17 mark of the middle frame. Jessica Robert collected an outlet pass from Tea Miles, raced down the rink and wristed a shot past Hauser. It was Robert's fifth goal of the season.
  • Two minutes later, Lauren Legler scored the game-winning goal. She picked up her own rebound and tucked a shot around Smullen's left pad. Legler's third goal of the season was assisted by Brittany Foster.
 
CLOSE CALLS
  • William Smith nearly had the game's first goal just under a minute into the game. Mia LaPlante fired a shot off of the left goalpost.
  • The Herons controlled the second period, outshooting the Vikings 14-9.
  • Near the midway point of the period, Alex George had a chance to give William Smith a two-goal lead, but her shot from the point was smothered by Smullen.
  • The Herons had a chance to extend the lead with a power play early in the third period, but Smullen stopped all four of William Smith's shots.
 
UP NEXT
After a week off, William Smith will be back in action on Jan. 27 when it takes on UMass Boston. Faceoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Edward T. Barry Rink.
