Skidmore slips past Herons in conference clash

GENEVA, N.Y.— The William Smith College basketball team fell to Skidmore 66-52 in a Liberty League matchup in Bristol Gymnasium. The Herons fall to 6-13 overall and 4-8 in conference play, while the Thoroughbreds move to 15-4 overall with a 11-1 mark in conference play.
 
Sophomore Maddie Patrick led the Herons with a career-high 17 points and three rebounds while senior Lauren DeVaney posted 14 points and 12 rebounds for her team-leading ninth double-double of the season. Junior Brooke Jarvis chipped in 13 points and five rebounds in the loss.

HERON STAT LEADERS  
FIRST HALF
  • Jarvis opened the scoring for William Smith with a deep three before the Herons and Thoroughbreds traded points for the remainder of the opening quarter.
  • William Smith ended the first quarter on top 13-12 after DeVaney converted a driving layup with 40 seconds left on the clock.
  • Skidmore showed a strong defense in the second quarter, keeping the Herons to shooting just 25% from the floor.
  • The Thoroughbreds went on a 14-2 run to close out the first half up by 10.
  • Jarvis and Patrick combined for 13 points and three rebounds in the first half.
SECOND HALF
  • Skidmore opened the second half on a 5-0 run before DeVaney converted a jumper to end the early streak.
  • The Thoroughbreds would hit five three-pointers to extend their lead heading into the final ten minutes.
  • The Herons answered in the fourth with a 6-0 run behind points from Jarvis, Patrick and DeVaney.
  • William Smith shot a game-high 50% from the floor in the final ten minutes to outscore Skidmore 21-12 in the final quarter.
  • Skidmore's lead proved to be too much for the Herons to come back from despite the late effort, handing the Herons a conference defeat before heading on the road for two more conference games this weekend.

William Smith will be back in action this weekend as it heads to St. Lawrence and Clarkson for two conference matchups. The Herons take on the Saints on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and the Golden Knights on Saturday at 2 p.m.
