Walker nets 18, but Tigers slip past Statesmen

GENEVA, N.Y.—Rochester Institute of Technology became the first team to outrebound Hobart College this season on its way to a 73-64 Liberty League win over the Statesmen in Bristol Gym tonight. Hobart came into the game third in the nation in rebounding margin, but RIT grabbed a 37-32 advantage on the glass.
 
The Statesmen (6-5, 2-2 LL) were led by senior forward Patrick Walker's team-high 18 points. Senior forward Jackson Meshanic added 13 points and seven rebounds. Graduate student Evan Goldberg pulled down a team-high eight boards to go with six points and two steals.
 
The Tigers (6-4, 2-1) put four players in double figures led by sophomore center Andrew Fox's double-double on 19 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Kevin Ryan narrowly missed a second double-double, posting 18 points and nine rebounds. Junior guards Mark Osime and Matt Caggiano each added 11 points.
 
KEY STATS
  • In addition to their advantage on the glass, RIT shot 50% from the floor and limited Hobart to 41% shooting.
  • The Tigers outscored the Statesmen in the paint 50-40.
  • RIT was 10-of-12 at the free throw line, while Hobart was 4-of-6.
 
FIRST HALF
  • The Statesmen grabbed early leads of 2-0 and 4-2 when Walker made layups off assists from Meshanic.
  • The Tigers muscled their way in front with four straight buckets from four different players. They never relinquished that lead.
  • RIT stretched its lead to as many as 10 in the first half and went into the break with a 33-25 lead.
 
SECOND HALF
  • Five minutes into the second half, Osime sank a pull-up jumper to give the visitors their largest lead of the night, 46-31.
  • Hobart kept fighting and got within five, 69-64, with 20 seconds left, but the Tigers put the game away at the line making all four of their free throws down the stretch.
