#7 Norwich clips William Smith 2-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College ice hockey team gave seventh-ranked Norwich all it could handle but was edged 2-1 in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this afternoon. With the loss, the Herons fall to 7-8-1 overall on the season and 5-5-0 in conference play.

Sophomore Erin Murray matched her career-high with 39 saves in just under 59 minutes of work. First-year Kelly Howe scored for William Smith.  Madison Brunet made 10 saves in goal for Norwich (9-4-0, 7-1-0).

KEY STATS:
  • The Cadets finished the game with a 41-11 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Norwich had the game's only power play in the third period and did not convert.

SCORING SUMMARY:
  • All three goals came in the second period where Norwich outshot William Smith 18-3.
  • Neris Archambault opened the scoring at the 14:07 mark of the first period. She intercepted a clearing pass, skated to her left and ripped a shot past Murray. It was her first goal of the season.
  • William Smith tied the game 15 seconds later. Howe collected a rebound in the low slot and tucked a shot around Brunet's left leg pad for her second collegiate goal. Izzy Friedman was awarded the assist after her initial shot was stopped by Brunet.
  • Ann Frederique-Guay scored the game-winning goal at the 16:27 mark of the second period. She snapped a shot from the slot past Murray for her seventh goal of the season. It was a great individual effort from Frederique-Guay, who created the scoring chance causing a turnover between the faceoff circles.
