Hobart to host Utica in 1st home bowl game since 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College football team will host a bowl game for the first time since 2003, when the Statesmen take on Utica University on Boswell Field at Urick Stadium Saturday, Nov. 18. The ECAC Clayton Chapman Bowl is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m.

INSIDE THE SERIES
  • Saturday's contest will be just the third meeting between the Statesmen and Pioneers and the first since 2013.
  • With Hobart Hall of Famer Tyre Coleman '15 and Ali Marpet '15 in the lineup, the Statesmen defeated Utica 45-26 in Utica in 2012 and 34-21 on Boswell Field a year later.
  • Coleman broke the Hobart single game record for sacks with 4.5 in the 2012 game.

HOBART GOES BOWLING
  • The Statesmen earned a bowl invitation for the fourth consecutive season and will host a bowl game for the first time since defeating Norwich in the 2003 ECAC North Atlantic Bowl.
  • Hobart also won bowl championships in 2019 (New York Bowl) and 2021 (ECAC Bushnell Bowl). The Statesmen lost their first bowl game in last season's Bushnell Bowl.
  • Hobart actually has six bowl invitations. The 1993 Statesmen merited a postseason ECAC bowl bid, but declined the invitation due to the travel distance and conflicts with the academic schedule. 

FOR THE RECORD
  • Hobart ended the regular season with an 8-2 overall record. The Statesmen went 4-2 in Liberty League finishing third in the conference standings. Their only losses came against NCAA playoff teams Ithaca and Union.
  • Hobart is 6-0 on Boswell Field this season. The Statesmen have won eight straight at home dating back to last season.
  • Utica also posted an 8-2 record this year. The Pioneers finished Empire 8 play wth a 4-2 record, falling to league champion and NCAA playoff bound Cortland and Brockport, which earned an ECAC bowl bid.
  • Utica is 3-2 on the road this season, including a 38-3 loss at Brockport on Oct. 28. 

WHEN HOBART HAS THE BALL
  • On offense, the Statesmen are averaging 351.1 yards per game. Hobart is more productive on the ground, averaging 190.1 yards per game.
  • The Statesmen average 31.2 points per game, scoring a season-high 49 points against Keystone and a season-low 10 at Union. 
  • Senior running back Rayshawn Boswell leads the balanced Hobart attack. He's rushed for 612 yards and 12 touchdowns, caught a team-high 24 passes for 222 yards and is the team's top kick return threat, averaging 25.0 yards per return this season.
  • Utica's defense is allowing 284.4 yards per game and just 115.1 yards per game on the ground, allowing 18.6 points per game.
  • The Pioneers have posted shutouts in two of their last three games, ending the regular season with a 14-0 win over St. John Fisher.
  • Graduate student linebacker Anthony Fasano leads UC with 74 tackles and 16.5 tackles for loss.

WHEN UTICA HAS THE BALL
  • The Pioneers average 306.2 yards per game, including 185.1 yards per game passing.
  • They are producing 24.4 points per game, logging a season-high of 48 against Hartwick and a season-low of three against both Cortland and Brockport.
  • Sophomore quarterback Brett Fuller has completed 65% of his passes for 1,642 yards and 10 touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Peyton Ausfeld is his top target with a team-high 40 receptions for 405 yards and two TDs.
  • The Hobart defense is yielding 277.7 yards per game and just 115.1 yards per game rushing. The Statesmen are allowing 14.8 points per game.
  • Junior linebacker Anthony Romano has a team-leading 71 tackles to go with 6.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two pass breakups and an interception.

SPECIAL TEAMS
  • Hobart calls on junior Tobias Wefering to handle placekicking and punting duties. He leads the Liberty League in punting average (41.0 yds/p), punts of 50-plus yards (8) and percentage of punts inside the opponent's 20 (42.4%) and field goal percentage (75%). He has 10 touchbacks on 58 kickoffs this season.
  • Utica uses two players, one for punting and one for placekicking. 
  • Junior punter Freddie Callo is averaging 38.1 yards per punt, landing 33.3% inside the 20. He has had three punts travel 50-plus yards this year.
  • Graduate student Corey Lichtman has converted 53% of his field goal attempts and has 17 touchbacks on 46 kickoffs this year.
