Jarvis posts career-high 37 points as Herons late comeback falls short

POTSDAM, N.Y.— The William Smith College basketball team fell to Clarkson 77-76 in a Liberty League matchup this afternoon in Alumni Gymnasium. The Herons fall to 6-15 overall and 4-10 in conference play, while the Golden Knights move to 8-11 overall with a 4-9 mark in conference play.
 
Junior Brooke Jarvis posted a career-high 37 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Jarvis shot 63.6% from the floor including 3-for-4 from behind the arc and 6-for-6 from the free throw line to lead the Herons. Senior Lauren DeVaney chipped in 13 points and 11 rebounds for her team-leading 10th double-double of the season.

HERON STAT LEADERS  

FIRST HALF
  • William Smith went on a 6-2 run to start the contest behind points from Jarvis and sophomore Maddie Patrick.
  • The Golden Knights responded with a 16-2 run of their own before Jarvis ended the run by converting a layup.
  • Jarvis would put up seven of her 13 first quarter points in the remaining 2:30 of the opening ten minutes to bring the Herons within two heading into the second.
  • Clarkson opened the second quarter on a 10-3 run to extend their lead before DeVaney sunk a deep three-pointer to cut the Golden Knights lead to nine.
  • The Herons and Golden Knights would trade points for the remainder of the half as Clarkson would stay on top by 14 heading into halftime.
  • Jarvis posted 17 points and three rebounds in the first half to keep William Smith in the game.
SECOND HALF
  • The Golden Knights controlled the tempo of the early minutes in the second half, extending their lead to 18 before first-year Mckenzie Mandyck responded with a three-pointer to cut into Clarkson's lead.
  • Clarkson held William Smith to 16 points in the third quarter to extend their lead to 20 heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • The Herons offense came to life in the fourth quarter, going on a 13-2 run to start the final push.
  • William Smith shot 55% from the floor in the final ten minutes while keeping the Golden Knights to just 26.7% and only 10 points in the final 10 minutes.
  • The Herons took just its second lead of the day with 2:23 left in the game as Jarvis hit a deep three-pointer to give William Smith a one point lead.
  • Clarkson's Elaina Porter nailed a three-pointer with 1:22 left to tie the game at 77 before Raelin Burns converted from the free throw line to give the Golden Knights a one-point lead with 35 seconds left.
  • The Herons had the last shot of the game with one second remaining but couldn't convert to secure a victory as the Golden Knights escaped the late offensive surge by William Smith.

William Smith will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 10, when it welcomes Union College to Bristol Gymnasium for a Liberty League matchup. Tipoff between the Herons and the Dutchwomen is set for 5:30 p.m.
