William Smith tops Castleton on senior day

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College junior Brittany Foster scored a pair of goals as the Heron hockey team defeated Castleton 3-2 on Senior Day at The Cooler. With the win, William Smith picked up three key points in the conference standings. The Herons are 10-11-1 overall with an 8-7-0 record in conference play.
 
In addition to Foster, sophomore Lauren Legler logged a pair of assists. Junior Annie Hauser played all 60 minutes in goal and made 19 saves. Darby Palisi logged a goal and an assist in the loss for the Spartans (12-10-1, 9-7-0). Kristen DiCicco made 31 saves in goal for Castleton.  
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
  • The Herons finished the game with a 34-21 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Castleton was 1-for-4 on the power play and William Smith did not score on its one power play.
 
NOTEWORTHY  
SCORING SUMMARY
  • The Spartans opened the scoring at the 12:17 mark of the first period when Brooke Greenwood slipped a shot through Hauser's legs. Her 11th goal of the season was assisted by Palisi and Samantha Lawler. It was a power-play tally.
  • William Smith tied the game just past the midway point of regulation. Foster ripped a shot from the right circle past DiCicco for her fourth goal of the year. Elizabeth MacMurray and Legler were awarded assists on the goal.
  • With seven seconds remaining in the middle stanza, senior Mia LaPlante gave the Herons a 2-1 lead. She pounced on a rebound on the left side and flipped the shot over the goalie's leg. Her fifth goal of the year was assisted by Annabel Ziskin, whose initial shot was saved. Legler picked up her second assist of the game on the goal.
  • Just under seven minutes into the third period, Palisy made it 2-2. She stole the puck along the end boards, wrapped around the back of the net and tucked a shot past Hauser for her 13th goal of the season.
  • Foster scored the game-winning goal at the 11:21 mark of the final frame. She intercepted a Castleton clearing pass, weaved through a pair of defenders and wristed a shot from the left faceoff circle that trickled through the goalie's legs.
 
CLOSE CALLS
  • At the 5:08 mark of the second period, Castleton nearly took a 2-0 lead. Katherine Campoli had a shot stopped by Hauser. Moa Carlsson's rebound attempt appeared to hit the right goal post and bounce into the net, but the puck harmlessly trickled through the goal mouth and was cleared out of the zone.
  • With just over three minutes remaining in the second period, sophomore Kayla Ketchabaw dented the iron with a hard shot from the right faceoff circle.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action next weekend, Feb. 10-11, when it takes on Norwich and New England College. Faceoff on Friday in Northfield, Vermont, is scheduled for 7 p.m.
