Hobart edges TCNJ 5-4 to earn first win of season

EWING, N.J.—The Hobart College Tennis team defeated The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) 5-4 this evening in a regional battle, securing its first win while handing TCNJ its first loss of the season. The Statesmen move to 1-2 on the season while the Lions fall to 4-1. 
 
In doubles action, TCNJ took two of three points to grab the early lead. The Lions clipped the Statesmen 8-6 in the No. 3 spot and 8-7 (7-4) in the No. 2 spot to grab the lead.
 
Senior Jett Wright and junior Sean Pesin earned the point for Hobart with an 8-5 win over the seventh ranked doubles team in the region, Matthew Michibata and Harrison Maitland-Carter at the No. 1 spot. 
 
In singles play, the Statesmen took over the lead, winning four out of the six singles matches. Pesin beat 14th ranked Michibata in thrilling fashion, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 9-11 in the No. 1 spot. Senior Harry Lyu defeated Adrian Tsui 6-4, 6-3, 11-9 at No. 2 spot while junior Winter Fagerberg topped Maitland-Carter 6-4, 2-6, 10-3 in the No. 3 spot.
 
First-year Nick Fischer won at No. 5 spot to secure the win for the statesmen by defeating Derek Jordan 6-3, 6-3. This was the first time in Fischer's collegiate career that he won the clinching point for the Statesmen.

Hobart will be back in action tomorrow as it heads to New York University (NYU) in New York City, N.Y.  First serve between the Statesmen and the Violets is set for 1 p.m. in Stadium Tennis Center.
