Resilient Statesmen ride, rally past Friars

Box Score SPARK GLENCOE, Md.—The Hobart College lacrosse team used a smothering ride to rally past Providence College 13-11 on Tierney Field at USA Lacrosse Headquarters in the FCA Lacrosse Invitational this afternoon. The Statesmen rode the Friars 52% of the time and overcame a three-goal halftime deficit to improve to 4-3 on the season.
 
"This was a great game to participate in," Hobart Head Coach Greg Raymond said. "We're grateful for the opportunity and for Corrigan Sports for putting together an excellent event."
 
First-year goalie Elhanan Wilson made 12 saves to earn his first collegiate win in his first start. Sophomore midfielder John Jude Considine led the offense with a hat trick, including what proved to be the game-winning goal. Sophomore attackmen Will Delano and Alex Rosa each posted two goals and an assist, while junior attackman Anthony Dattellas scored twice. Dattellas was also credited with a game-high two caused turnovers.
 
Ryan Bell was one of three Providence players with three or more points, posting a game-high six on two goals and four assists. Faceoff specialist Quinn McConnaughey won 13-of-19 at the X and grabbed a game-high seven groundballs. Goalie James Corasaniti made 13 saves for PC.
 
HIGH SCORING FIRST
  • The opening 15 minutes saw the teams combining for nine goals.
  • The Friars' Michael Chabra (3g, 1a) opened the scoring, but Hobart countered with three goals in under two minutes.
  • Sophomore James Greene, Rosa and Considine scored in a span of just 91 seconds to stake the Statesmen to a 3-1 lead.
  • Providence swung back into the lead with a four goal surge, including a pair of tallies by Jack Horrigan (2g, 1a).
  • Graduate student Bradley Simas scored 15 seconds before the end of the frame to get the Statesmen within one, 5-4.
 
GOALIES STEP UP
  • Defense set the tone in the second quarter.
  • Corasaniti stopped both shots he faces, while Wilson made saves on five of the seven shots he saw.
  • Providence was able to sneak in two goals early in the quarter to carry a 7-4 lead into the break.
 
THE COMEBACK
  • Hobart got in a groove early, winning the first two faceoffs and converting on both.
  • Delano and Rosa netted the goals to pull the Statesmen within one midway through the third quarter.
  • Delano netted his second goal of the game to end the scoring in the third and again get Hobart within one.
  • Considine tied the game with the first goal of the fourth quarter, but the Friars (4-4) slipped back in front with an extra-man goal.
  • Dattellas, who was whistled for the penalty, made up for it by tying the game at 10 with just under 10 minutes left.
  • That goal launched the Statesmen on a 4-0 run that gave them a comfortable three-goal lead with just over three minutes to go.

  • Hobart will head to the Salt City to take on Syracuse University March 25. The opening faceoff of the annual Kraus-Simmons Trophy game is set  for 1 p.m.
