Statesmen win a pair of matches in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla.— The Hobart College tennis team played a pair of matches today in Orlando, Fla., at the USTA national campus. The Statesmen downed Carleton University (8-2) 7-2, followed by a 6-3 defeat of Oglethorpe University (3-5).
 
The matchup against the Knights started with singles in which Hobart took the lead, winning five out of the six matches in straight sets. In the No. 1 position, junior Sean Pesin defeated 21st nationally ranked singles player Tarm Rojanasoonthon, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). 
 
Senior Harry Lyu beat Tate Fuller at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), while at the No. 3 spot, junior Winter Fagerberg topped Yuv Kataria, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Hyatt Oyer defeated Zach Leslie 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 4 position. 
 
Last week's Liberty League Rookie of the Week, first-Year Nick Fischer, topped Ozzie Viswanathan at the No. 5 spot to give Hobart a 5-0 lead. 
 
In doubles action, Hobart extended its lead, earning two of the three double points. 14th nationally ranked doubles players Jett Wright and Pesin defeated Rojanasoonthon and Fuller at the No. 1 position, 8-6. At the No. 3 spot, Fischer and first-year Aidan Staunton clipped Kataria and Aniketh Vipparla in a close match, 8-6. 
 
In Hobart's second match of the day, the Statesmen and Stormy Petrels shared the singles points, 3-3. At the No.1 position, Oyer defeated Kirkman Kiker, 6-1,6-1, in straight sets, as well as Steiner against Sam Wasco, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 3 spot. Sophomore Rahul Vallabhajosula made his season debut, topping Cameron Burkes 6-2, 5-7, 10-7, in the No. 4 spot. 
 
Hobart secured the match winning all three double points, turning the match into a 6-3 victory for the Statesmen. Pesin and Wright defeated Kiker and Wasco 8-3, at the No. 1 position, while Steiner and Lyu defeated Daniel Cohen and Jefferson Page, 8-6 at the No 2 spot.
 
At No. 3 Fischer and Staunton topped Tony Molinet and Burkes, 8-2.

The Statesmen will play another pair of matches tomorrow against Hamilton College (2-4) and Salisbury (5-3). First serve against the Continentals is set for 11 a.m. The second matchup against the Sea Gulls is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
