Statesmen seek Kraus-Simmons Trophy Saturday

3/23/2023 4:21:00 PM

The storied rivalry between the Hobart College and Syracuse University lacrosse teams will be renewed Saturday, March 25 at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse. The 108th edition of one the most contested rivalries in collegiate lacrosse will faceoff at 1 p.m.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW FOR SATURDAY
  1. The Trophy: Since 1986, Hobart and Syracuse have played for the Kraus-Simmons Trophy, which honors National Lacrosse Hall of Famers Babe Kraus '24 of Hobart and SU's Roy Simmons. The Statesmen have captured the trophy three times, winning the inaugural game 16-13 in Geneva, the 2006 contest 9-8 in Syracuse and the 2013 showdown 13-12, also in Syracuse.
  2. Follow Along: The game will be broadcast on WEOS-FM (89.5/90.3 in Geneva) with Joe Lasky and David Gage describing the action. The game will be webcast on ACC Network Extra with live stats available on cuse.com.
  3. Award Winners: Hobart has alternated wins and losses this season, bringing a 4-3 record into Saturday, following a 13-11 win over Providence. Defenseman Mark Synnott was named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week after posting a goal, a ground ball and a caused turnover against the Friars, who struggled to move the ball against the Statesmen, clearing less than 50% of the time. In his first collegiate start, first-year goalie Elhanan Wilson made 12 saves to earn the win and the A10 Rookie of the Week award.
  4. Scouting Report: Syracuse has won two in a row to improve to 5-4 on the season. The Orange are coming off a 22-6 win over St. Bonaventure on Tuesday. Alex Simmons and Owen Hiltz led SU with three goals apiece. Joey Spallina had a team-high six points on two goals and four assists.
  5. A House Divided: For the Rosa family of Syracuse, picking sides in Saturday's game is difficult. Hobart sophomore attackman Alex Rosa (9g, 1a) will square off against his brother, Syracuse junior defensive middie Max Rosa (1g, 6 GB, 3 CT). Their father, Tom '86, was a two-sport star at Hobart. He won four national championships with the Statesmen lacrosse team, earned the 1986 Iroquois Nationals Award as the Division III Player of the Year and scored a goal during Hobart's 8-goal third quarter that propelled it to victory in the first Kraus-Simmons Trophy game.
