AUBURN, N.Y.—Clarkson University won both games of a Liberty League baseball doubleheader over Hobart College at Falcon Park this afternoon. The Golden Knights ran away with Game 1 12-3, but had to sweat out a tense ninth inning to take Game 2 7-5.
Hobart graduate student
Michael Whiteherse led the Statesmen at the plate, finishing the day 4-for-8 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Clarkson's Cam Jerrett was 4-for-7 and Jake Millich was 4-for-10.
GAME 1
- Clarkson plated runs in each of the first five innings, shaking off the cold, the wind and the rain to build a 10-0 lead through three and a half innings. Robert Whalen, who was 3-for-4 in the game, delivered the big blow, clubbing a three-run homer in the third.
- Hobart got on the board when junior Ty Gallagher delivered his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left.
- The Knights' Nicholas Hofacker struck out six in a seven-inning complete game on the mound.
GAME 2
- CU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, but this time, the Statesmen responded with a pair of runs to take their first lead of the series.
- First-year Jeremy Sanchez singled to left to bring home Whiteherse and then first-year Christian Petry put down a sacrifice bunt that scored first-year Isaiah Pinto.
- The Golden Knights went back in front on Kent Wilson's two-run double down the right field line.
- In the bottom of the second, Whiteherse came up with the bases loaded and singled up the middle to tie the game.
- Clarkson retook the lead with a run in the fifth and padded its lead with two more in the seventh.
- Hobart got one of the two back in the bottom of the seventh when Whiteherse's ground out scored first-year Nate Garrett.
- In the eighth, Jerrett knocked a grounder deep in the hole between short and third. Petry was able to knock it down, but didn't have time to throw him out. Colby Brouillette scored on the play.
- The Statesmen didn't go quietly, rallying in the ninth. Will Jones led off with a slow roller to shortstop and beat the throw to first. First-year Drew Bolduc was hit by a pitch, ending Mateo Sarabia's relief appearance. Alex Morse worked a four-pitch walk from reliever Jason McGee to load the bases.
- McGee's first two pitches to Garrett were also balls and CU again made a change on the mound, turning to Carter Gould.
- Gould worked the count full against Garrett before his sacrifice fly out to right brought home Jones.
- Gould earned his first save of the season with two more fly ball outs to nail down the two run victory.
