The William Smith College Alpine skiing team is in Mammoth Lakes, California, to compete in the USCSA National Championships on Mammoth Mountain. The Herons earned their chance to compete on the national stage by taking first place at the USCSA Mideast Regional Championships in their first season as a varsity sport.
The women's giant slalom national championship will be held on Wednesday, March 8, with the first runs starting at 9:30 a.m. PST, and the women's slalom national championship on Friday, March 10 at 9:30 a.m. PST.
Heading into the national championships, William Smith produced three top-15 finishers in the regional championships. Senior
Caraline Gray led the Herons in third place with 53.47 race points, while sophomore
Marjorie Plants finished fourth with 58.36. First-year
Katherine Broderick finished 14th with 143.49 race points. Gray and Plants were also recognized in the top-five fastest of the season in the Mideast Region.
In the USCSA Mideast Regional Championships, the Herons placed second in the giant slalom and first in the slalom at Bristol Mountain. Gray took second place in the giant slalom after clocking in at 1:51.90, while Plants finished in fourth with a time of 1:53.28. The following day, Plants finished fourth in the slalom with a time of 1:56.43, with Broderick finishing right after in fifth, with a time of 1:56.99.
Gray, Plants, and Broderick, along with
Julia Bragg,
Ashley Byron,
Emilie Waters and
Bridget Weier will represent William Smith at the 2023 USCSA National Championships this week and will look to make their mark on the national stage for the first time in program history.
