Daniels nets 5, #8 William Smith races past Brockport 19-4

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—First-year Natalie Daniels scored five goals to lead the eighth-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team to a 19-4 victory over SUNY Brockport in a non-conference contest at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field this afternoon. With the win, the Herons improved to 3-0 on the season. The Golden Eagles are now 1-2 overall.
 
Daniels added an assist to finish the contest with a game-high six points. She also had a game-high six draw controls. Senior Maddie Montgomery had three goals and five draw controls. Junior Allie McGinty notched four points, including a game-high two assists. Three other Herons had multi-point games. Sophomore Katherine Murray scooped up three ground balls. Sophomore Maura Smeader and junior Madison Dicks each played 30 minutes in goal. Dicks had two saves.
 
Cassidy Burnash led the way for Brockport with three points on two goals and two assists. Julia Quinlan logged a game-high two caused turnovers and had two ground balls. The Golden Eagles used three goalies. Hannah Parsons made 11 saves in just under 50 minutes of work.
 
KEY STATS
  • The Herons dominated the stat sheet, finishing the contest with a 42-10 advantage in shots on goal.
  • William Smith won the battle in the draw circle 18-7 and was 11-for-11 clearing the ball. Brockport was 10-for-13 on its clear attempts.

  • William Smith jumped out to a 5-0 lead just past the five-minute mark of the first quarter, scoring on five of their first six shots of the game. The lone miss was a shot off of the goalpost.

EXTENDING THE LEAD
  • Senior Payton McMahon scored the first two goals of the second quarter to give the Herons an 8-0 lead. The first goal was assisted by McGinty and the second was an unassisted strike. With the pair of goals, McMahon now has five goals on the season.
  • Burnash snapped William Smith's run with a free position goal at the 8:04 mark of the second quarter.
  • The Herons took control of the game, scoring the game's next four goals.
  • Montgomery started the run at the 5:17 mark of the second quarter with her eighth goal of the season.
  • Daniels completed her first career hat trick one minute later. She collected a pass from sophomore Kate Colvin and beat Parsons. It was her fourth goal of the season.
  • Junior Chloe McGlynn gave the Herons an 11-1 lead with just under three minutes remaining in the first half. Junior Emily Griffin was awarded an assist on McGlynn's second goal of the season.
 
THIRD QUARTER
  • William Smith outscored Brockport 4-1 in the third quarter.
  • Griffin extended the Herons' run to four goals with a free position goal.
  • Quinlan pocketed a goal for Brockport with 10:16 remaining in the frame, but that would be as close as the Golden Eagles would get.
  • The Herons closed out the stanza with three goals, making it 15-2 after 45 minutes. Daniels, McGinty and Davis scored for William Smith
 
FINAL FRAME
  • Alayna Foos and Burnash added a pair of goals for Brockport in the fourth quarter. Both tallies were unassisted.
  • The Herons rounded out the game, notching the game's final four goals.
  • Senior Kaitlin Pellechia started the run with her fifth goal of the season. Two minutes later, Montgomery completed her hat trick. Daniels added a goal and an assist late in the game. Her fifth goal of the season came with four minutes left and she set up first-year Taryn Luzi's first collegiate goal at the buzzer.

William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, March 11, when it takes on No. 23 Geneseo. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Geneseo, New York.
