Statesmen win 5th straight, sweep Tigers 9-0

GENEVA, N.Y.— The No. 16 regionally ranked Hobart College tennis team swept RIT, 9-0, this afternoon in Liberty League matchup in Bristol Field House. The Statesmen move to 13-4 overall with a 5-1 mark in conference play, while the Tigers fall to 6-10 overall and 2-6 in the Liberty League. 

Hobart took an early lead in doubles action, earning all three available doubles points. First-year's Nick Fischer and Aidan Staunton downed Grahith Movva and Christian Berko, 8-2, for their first win in the No. 1 doubles position. Fischer and Staunton are now 12-1 in doubles action this season. 

Senior Guthrie Speers and sophomore Hyat Oyer edged Brennan Bull and Joel Pho in thrilling fashion, 8-7 (7-5), at the No. 2 spot, while sophomore Jacob Linares and first-year Jose Martinez Barelles beat Brian Bork and Verosh Jayanetti, 8-6 at No. 3. 

Hobart secured the match in singles action, winning all six singles matches in straight sets. No. 17 regionally ranked singles player and Liberty League Singles Player of the Week, junior Sean Pesin, defeated Movva, at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0.

At the No. 2 spot junior Winter Fagerberg topped Berko, 6-1, 6-1. Fagerberg is now 9-2 in singles action this season. Oyer stayed undefeated in singles play, earning his 12th consecutive singles win by beating Bull at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1.

Sophomore Nick Grosso downed Pho, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot. Grosso is now 8-2 in singles action. Sophomore Jacob Linares clipped Max Chang, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), in the No. 6 spot.

Fischer clinched the victory for the Statesmen at the No. 4 spot, defeating Bork, 6-2, 6-0, for his 12th consecutive win of the season.

Hobart will be back in action at home on Saturday, April 22, when it takes on No. 33 nationally ranked RPI (9-5). First serve between the Statesmen and the Engineers is set for 2 p.m.
