Hobart heads to UMass for A10 finale

4/26/2023 4:13:00 PM

AMHERST, Mass.—The Hobart College lacrosse team will travel to the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, on Friday, April 28, for its final game of the regular season. The Atlantic 10 Conference matchup is set to start at 5 p.m. at Garber Field.

The game will be broadcast live on WHWS-FM and webcast on ESPN+.

The Statesmen are 5-7 overall with a 1-3 record in A10 play. Hobart is looking to bounce back from a five-goal loss against Richmond on Saturday. Sophomore Will Delano led the Statesmen with a career-high five points on a goal and four assists.

The Minutemen are 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the A10. UMass is coming off an 11-10 loss to Saint Joseph's over the weekend. Junior midfielder Grant Breyo and senior attackman Carter Castillo each logged three points.

PLAYOFF PICTURE
  • Two of the four spots in the inaugural A10 Championship Tournament have been clinched. Saint Joseph's has clinched at least a share of the regular season title and will be the No. 1 seed. Richmond has also clinched a spot.
  • UMass, High Point and Hobart remain alive for the final two spots. The formula for the Minutemen and Panthers is simple, win and they're in.
  • The Statesmen's path to the playoffs is a bit more complicated.
    • If Hobart beats UMass and High Point beats Saint Joseph's, the Statesmen and Minutemen would be tied for the fourth and final spot with Hobart getting the No. 4 seed by virtue of the head-to-head tie breaker.
    • If Hobart beats UMass and the Hawks win at HPU, the Statesmen, Minutemen and Panthers will be tied for the final two playoff berths. That tie would remain in place for the first three A10 tie breakers. The fourth tie breaker, goals against of the tied teams in head-to-head competition, might be the deciding factor.

ABOUT THE STATESMEN
  • Senior faceoff specialist Adam Shea is second in the A10 and sixth in the nation in ground balls per game (9.25). He's also fourth in the A10 in faceoff winning percentage (.516).
  • Senior attackman Troy Barthelme has yielded the hot stick for the Statesmen of late. In 11 games this season, he has 25 points (18-7), including 18 (14-4) over the past four games.
  • Attackmen Alex Rosa and Sam Ward are tied for the team lead with seven extra-man goals apiece. They share the A10 lead and are ninth in the nation. Rosa and Ward are tied for sixth on Hobart's Division I era season list. Eric Curry '96 (9 in 1996) and Jared Bebee '00 (9 in 1999) are tied for fourth. The program's DI era record is 11 by Nathan Roost '98 in 1997.

ABOUT THE MINUTEMEN
  • Graduate student Gabriel Procyk leads the team with 35 points on 21 goals and 14 assists. He's eighth in the A10 in goals per game (1.75) and points per game (2.92) and ninth in assists per game (1.17).
  • Senior goalie Matt Knote leads the nation in save percentage (.593) and is fourth in goals against average (8.88).
  • Sophomore Caleb Hammett has won 56.1% of his faceoffs and has had a team-high 58 ground balls.

This will be the 11th matchup between the Statesmen and the Minutemen. UMass leads the series 8-2, including a 4-0 record in Amherst. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2009, when both teams were members of the ECAC Lacrosse League.
